CLIENT ALERT: Things You Can Still Do during MyIPO’s Temporary Closure of Operations

With reference to the notice on 17 March 2020 by the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) regarding its temporary closure of operations from 18 to 31 March 2020 (Period), the following are the things that you can still do during the Period:
- New trademark applications are still accepted provided they are submitted online. This however does not include applications under the Madrid System which will only be available after the Period; and
- All forms relating to patent and industrial design matters which may be filed electronically are still accepted.
For filings which cannot be submitted online, the deadline (if any) to do so has been extended to 1 April 2020 with the following exceptions
- Deadlines to respond to office actions (e.g. appeals, oppositions and payments) which fall within the Period will be extended to 30 April 2020; and
- Renewals for trademarks which have expired (or will expire) between 27 December 2019 and 27 March 2020 will be extended to 30 April 2020.
As judicial and legal services are not essential services, our business premises will be closed and our lawyers and staff will be working remotely during the Period.
